## About the border: Poland–Belarus border

The Polish-Belarusian border is an external border of the EU and the Schengen area, with full passport and customs checks on both sides. For several years the situation here has been unusually changeable: Poland has closed and reopened individual crossings a number of times in recent years, and the rules for traffic have changed at short notice. Before every trip, therefore, check the current status of the specific crossing in announcements from the Polish Border Guard and Ministry of Foreign Affairs – do not assume that a crossing open last week is open today.

This page lists four crossings. Terespol–Brest, on the Warsaw–Minsk route, has historically been the main crossing for cars and buses. Koroszczyn–Kozlovichi, close to Terespol, mainly serves freight traffic, which shows in its very long queues. Kuźnica–Bruzgi links the Białystok area with Hrodna, and Bobrowniki–Berestovitsa lies on the road from Białystok towards Hrodna and Vawkavysk. The status of each has changed in recent years, so treat the overview on the board as a starting point for checking official information.

In such changeable conditions our wait estimates are less reliable than on the Ukrainian border and may not reflect sudden changes such as a closure or suspended clearance. Queues usually grow before public holidays and during busy family travel periods, and at freight crossings they depend on how fast trucks are processed.

Before travelling, check the current entry rules for Belarus for citizens of your country, car insurance valid in Belarus, and the customs rules for bringing goods into the EU. Remember that Belarus is in a different time zone from Poland. Poland's foreign ministry has for a long time published warnings about travel to Belarus – it is worth reading them.
