## About the border: Montenegro–Albania border

The Montenegrin-Albanian border runs from the Accursed Mountains in the north, across Lake Skadar, to the mouth of the Bojana on the Adriatic. Neither Montenegro nor Albania is a member of the EU or the Schengen area, so the crossings have full passport and customs checks on both sides. For travellers this is a popular way to combine a holiday on the Montenegrin coast with a trip to Shkodër, Tirana or the Albanian Riviera.

The page lists two crossings on either side of Lake Skadar. Božaj–Hani i Hotit, east of the lake, is on the road from Podgorica via Tuzi to Shkodër and takes most traffic between Montenegro's capital and northern Albania; in our figures it usually comes out better. Sukobin–Muriqan, south of the lake, links the Ulcinj area with Shkodër and suits those staying on the southern Montenegrin coast; our data suggests that waits towards Albania are usually longer here.

Traffic peaks in July and August, especially on Saturdays when holiday stays change over, and with day trips from the coast to Shkodër. Out of season the crossings are usually quiet. Albania attracts more and more tourists travelling by car, so in season both crossings can be busier than their size would suggest.

Before travelling, have a passport or ID card ready (if both countries accept it for your nationality) and check that your insurance covers both countries – a green card is the simplest proof. Montenegro uses the euro; Albania's currency is the lek, although euros are often accepted in tourist areas. When one crossing has a queue, the other is on the opposite side of the lake – compare them on the board above.
