## About the border: Poland–Lithuania border

The Polish-Lithuanian border is Poland's shortest land border and at the same time its only direct road link to the Baltic states that does not pass through Belarus or the Kaliningrad region. Both countries are in the EU and the Schengen area, so there are no routine passport or customs checks. Poland has, however, temporarily reintroduced checks on this stretch too in recent years, so before travelling look at the Border Guard's current announcements and carry an ID card or passport.

The page lists two road crossings with clearly different roles. Budzisko–Kalvarija in the Suwałki region lies on the Via Baltica: it leads through Marijampolė to Kaunas and Vilnius and on towards Riga and Tallinn, and it takes most of the transit traffic, including a great many trucks. Ogrodniki–Lazdijai near Sejny is regional in character, used by borderland residents – among them the Lithuanian minority around Puńsk – and by tourists heading for Alytus and Druskininkai.

Our estimates for this border usually stay at a low, even level and should not be read as a picture of real queues at a given hour. Disruption mainly occurs during temporary checks or roadworks, or at busy periods: the start and end of the summer holidays, long weekends and the run-up to public holidays, when many people head for the Baltic coast or visit family. On weekdays trucks dominate, while at weekends and holidays cars take over, so allow extra time on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings.

Once across, set your watch one hour forward – Lithuania is on Eastern European Time. When the Via Baltica is busy and you are heading for southern Lithuania, Ogrodniki is often a good choice; for Kaunas, Vilnius and further north, Budzisko is usually quicker.
