## About the border: Poland–Germany border

The Polish-German border follows the Oder and the Lusatian Neisse from the Szczecin area down to the tripoint with the Czech Republic. Both countries are in the EU and the Schengen area, so this is an internal border with no routine passport or customs clearance. In recent years, however, both Germany and Poland have temporarily reintroduced checks on this stretch, and their scope has varied, so read the current police and Border Guard announcements before you travel. Always carry an identity document.

The list includes fourteen crossings of very different kinds. Four are on motorways and carry the main transit flows: Kołbaskowo–Pomellen on the A6 towards Berlin, Świecko on the A2, Olszyna–Forst on the A18 and Jędrzychowice–Ludwigsdorf on the A4 towards Dresden. A second group are bridges in divided towns – Słubice and Frankfurt (Oder), Gubin and Guben, Zgorzelec and Görlitz, Łęknica and Bad Muskau – used mostly by residents, shoppers and tourists. The rest are smaller local crossings such as Rosówek, Lubieszyn, Krajnik Dolny, Kostrzyn, Zasieki and Przewóz.

With no routine controls, queues here come mainly from traffic volume, roadworks and any temporary checks rather than from border formalities. On the motorways the hardest times are Friday afternoons and the start and end of long weekends and holidays; on the town bridges, commuter hours and Saturdays. Our estimates for this border usually stay at a low, even level, so when sudden disruption hits, keep an eye on live traffic reports as well.

Cars use German motorways free of charge, while some Polish sections, including parts of the A2, are tolled. When one motorway crossing is jammed, a neighbouring one often pays off: between Świecko and Kostrzyn, between Olszyna and Jędrzychowice, or between Kołbaskowo and the local crossings near Szczecin.
