## About the border: Poland–Ukraine border

The Polish-Ukrainian border is an external border of the European Union and the Schengen area. That means full clearance on both sides: passport and customs checks when leaving one country and again when entering the other. Waits are therefore noticeably longer than on borders inside the EU, and the differences between individual crossings can be very large. This page brings together nine road crossings, from Zosin in the north via Dorohusk, Dołhobyczów, Hrebenne and Budomierz to Korczowa, Medyka, Malhowice and Krościenko in the south.

Data from the last 60 days shows a clear split. Krościenko–Smilnytsia is usually the calmest in both directions, with entry into Poland by car typically taking around half an hour. At the other extreme is Medyka–Shehyni: several hours on average to enter Poland, and it is also the only pedestrian crossing on the list. Korczowa–Krakovets and Zosin–Ustyluh are also among the busiest towards Poland, while Hrebenne–Rava-Ruska sits in the middle at about an hour. Leaving for Ukraine is generally quicker than coming back, and Fridays and weekends tend to be the hardest.

Traffic peaks around public holidays, the start and end of the summer holidays and long weekends, when many families visit relatives on both sides. Trucks are handled through Ukraine's eCherha electronic queue, so their flow is managed separately. Before travelling, check your passport's validity, the rules on bringing excise goods into the EU, and whether your car insurance covers Ukraine. On the Ukrainian side, exit restrictions apply to some men of conscription age – check the current rules before you go.

When planning, compare the current times on the board above: the gap between neighbouring crossings often exceeds an hour, and driving a few dozen kilometres further can pay off. Each crossing's page shows its typical weekly and hourly pattern plus an editorial note with practical tips.
