# Belarus Border – Which Crossings Are Open

Which Poland–Belarus crossings are open to cars, buses and trucks, which documents you need, and what the Polish foreign ministry advises.

## First, a warning

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs keeps its highest warning level for Belarus and advises Polish citizens against all travel to the country. It cites rising tension, the war in the region and repeated arrests of Polish citizens as the reasons. The ministry also notes that if the situation deteriorates sharply, or traffic at the crossings is restricted or suspended, evacuation may be very difficult.

If you must go regardless, Polish citizens should register the trip in Odyseusz, the foreign ministry’s travel registration system, and everyone should follow the Straż Graniczna (Polish Border Guard) announcements – the availability of crossings on this border has changed many times in recent years, often at short notice.

## Which crossings are open

Since 17 November 2025, under a regulation of the Polish Ministry of the Interior and Administration, the following road crossings are operating on the border with Belarus:

- [Terespol – Brest](https://kolejkanagranicy.pl/en/przejscie/terespol-brzesc) – passenger traffic; for years this was the only crossing open to travellers and it still handles the most passenger traffic.
- [Kuźnica Białostocka – Bruzgi](https://kolejkanagranicy.pl/en/przejscie/kuznica-bruzgi) – passenger traffic only, no buses.
- [Bobrowniki – Berestovitsa](https://kolejkanagranicy.pl/en/przejscie/bobrowniki-bierestowica) – passenger traffic, plus coaches and trucks registered in the EU, the EEA and Switzerland.
- Kukuryki – Kozlovichi – freight traffic.

The rail crossings Kuźnica Białostocka – Grodno, Siemianówka – Svislach and Terespol – Brest are also operating. The other road crossings on this stretch of the border are currently closed to traffic. Always check the current status before you set off – decisions to suspend or restore traffic are made by regulation and can take effect within a few days.

All three road crossings for travellers lie on main roads: Terespol on the Warsaw – Brest route (national road no. 2), Kuźnica Białostocka on national road no. 19 towards Grodno, and Bobrowniki on national road no. 65 from Białystok. From Warsaw the shortest route leads to Terespol; from Białystok, to Bobrowniki or Kuźnica.

## What the queue at Terespol looks like

Terespol is the crossing with the longest track record and the most predictable rhythm. Heading into Poland, the shortest car queues are on Monday and Tuesday and the longest on Friday and Saturday. In late September 2026 the typical wait was about 20 minutes on a Monday and around two and a half hours on a Saturday.

The hourly pattern is unusual: unlike on the Ukrainian border, entering Poland at Terespol involves a longer wait at night than in the afternoon. So if you can choose, consider crossing during the day rather than after midnight. Since Kuźnica and Bobrowniki opened, travellers have an alternative, so compare current times at all three crossings.

At Kuźnica and Bobrowniki, the typical wait for cars over the last 60 days was short and similar on every day of the week, which is why the table doesn’t show a best or worst day for them. That could change quickly, however, if traffic starts shifting from Terespol to these crossings.

## Documents and Belarusian entry requirements

Polish citizens may cross the Belarusian border on a passport or temporary passport – an ID card is not enough. The document should be valid for at least 3 months from the date of leaving Belarus.

Until 31 December 2026, Polish citizens may enter Belarus visa-free for tourism. For entry overland, the total visa-free stay may not exceed 90 days in a calendar year – note that this is a calendar year, not any 180-day period as in the Schengen area. Other purposes of travel require a visa.

On entry you need health insurance (the Polish foreign ministry recommends cover of at least €10,000) and, if entering by car, third-party motor liability insurance recognised in Belarus. Belarus’s membership of the Green Card system is suspended, so a Polish Green Card won’t cover you there; in practice you need a Belarusian border insurance policy.

A stay of more than 10 days requires registration with the authorities. In a hotel, reception takes care of this – ask for written confirmation, as the Belarusian border guards may ask for it when you leave.

## What to watch out for once there

In the border zone on the Belarusian side, you may not use binoculars, cameras, video cameras or night-vision devices without permission from the Belarusian border guards. Violations are punishable by a fine. Photos taken from the queue or from the car window can therefore lead to serious trouble.

Since 1 January 2026, the base amount used in Belarus to calculate fines, duties and fees has been 45 Belarusian roubles. The penalty for breaking the rules in the border zone is 10 to 50 times that amount, so even a minor offence can cost several hundred or even more than two thousand roubles.

Carrying even trace amounts of drugs – including in e-cigarette liquid or as medical cannabis – is punishable in Belarus by several years in prison. Carry sedatives, painkillers or psychotropic medicines with a paper prescription or a doctor’s certificate translated into Russian or Belarusian; e-prescriptions are not recognised.

People with dual Polish–Belarusian citizenship are treated in Belarus solely as Belarusian citizens and must show a Belarusian passport when leaving – this also applies to children. A child travelling with a third party needs written consent from the parents, translated by a sworn translator into Belarusian or Russian.

## Pre-departure checklist

- A passport or temporary passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Belarus – an ID card is not enough.
- Health insurance and, if travelling by car, third-party motor liability insurance recognised in Belarus.
- A plan for your stay: registration for stays over 10 days, a visa for more than 90 days in a calendar year.
- Paper prescriptions with a translation into Russian or Belarusian if you’re taking medicines.
- Written, translated parental consent if a child is travelling with a third party.
- Trip registered in Odyseusz (Polish citizens) and the numbers of Polish diplomatic missions also written down on paper.

Coaches cannot use the Kuźnica crossing – bus services run through crossings where coach traffic is permitted. When you buy a ticket, check which way the bus goes, as this determines the waiting time at the border.

## Returning to Poland

On the way back, you go through a check at the EU’s external border. On the Belarusian stretch, the Polish Border Guard also carries out intensive border-protection operations away from the crossings. You may encounter patrols and checkpoints on roads in the border strip – stop and follow the officers’ instructions.
