## About Budzisko – Kalwarija

Budzisko, in the Szypliszki municipality of the Suwałki region, is the main road crossing between Poland and Lithuania. On the other side is Kalvarija, and the road continues through Marijampolė to Kaunas and Vilnius, and north towards Riga and Tallinn. It is part of the Via Baltica corridor, which carries most of the traffic between Western Europe and the Baltic states. The crossing handles cars in both directions, but on an ordinary day trucks dominate.

The Lithuanian border is an internal Schengen border, so there is no systematic passport clearance. Since 7 July 2025, however, Poland has been running temporary controls here, currently extended until 30 March 2027; Lithuania, as of September 2026, has not reintroduced checks of its own on this border. Polish Border Guard officers stop selected vehicles at random, mainly those entering Poland, so check the Border Guard's current announcements before you travel. Carry an ID card or passport. Remember also that Lithuania is in a different time zone – clocks there are one hour ahead of Poland, which matters when you plan ferries or bookings in the Baltic states.

Car traffic is usually heaviest at the start and end of long weekends and in the summer season, when people head for the Baltic coast and the Baltic capitals. When the main route is busy, or if you are going to the Lazdijai, Alytus or Druskininkai area, compare conditions with the Ogrodniki–Lazdijai crossing further south near Sejny.
