## About Słubice – Frankfurt Oder

Słubice and Frankfurt (Oder) are joined by a town bridge over the Oder that runs almost directly from one town centre to the other. Until 1945 Słubice was Frankfurt's right-bank district; today the two towns cooperate, among other things through the European University Viadrina and the Collegium Polonicum, so students, staff and residents cross the bridge every day. The crossing is open to cars in both directions, and you will also see pedestrians and cyclists on the bridge.

Like the rest of the Polish-German border, this is an internal Schengen border with no routine clearance. Germany and Poland are, however, currently running temporary controls here (as of September 2026: German since October 2023, Polish since July 2025 and extended, for now, until 30 March 2027), and in a town centre even brief spot checks of vehicles can block the approach streets. Before crossing, glance at the current announcements and carry an ID card or passport, even if you are only going shopping or to classes on the other bank. German motorways are free for cars.

Because it is a town bridge, the hardest times are rush hours and Saturdays, when Germans come to Słubice for shopping and services. Drivers in transit towards Berlin or Poznań should rather use the Świecko–Frankfurt (Oder) motorway crossing a few kilometres to the south, and for destinations further north, Kostrzyn nad Odrą.
