## About Zgorzelec – Görlitz

Zgorzelec and Görlitz form one of Europe's best-known divided towns: until 1945 the part on the right bank of the Lusatian Neisse was a district of Görlitz, and today it is a separate Polish town in Lower Silesia. Several bridges link the two banks, including a footbridge in the old town; the road crossing is open to cars in both directions. It is used by residents, by visitors coming to see Görlitz's historic old town, and by people commuting to work or school on the other side.

The Schengen area makes shared town life easier: there is no routine clearance on the bridge, and you drive across it like any other street. Even so, temporary controls are in force on the border at present – German since October 2023, Polish since 7 July 2025 (as of September 2026) – and officers now and then stop cars or pedestrians at random on either side of the Neisse, which can slow traffic at rush hour; the Polish Border Guard and Bundespolizei announcements have the current information. Take your ID even for a short walk or shopping trip on the German side. Cars use German motorways free of charge.

In the town centre, traffic peaks at rush hours, on Saturdays and during larger events in either town. Long-distance transit is better routed along the A4 through the Jędrzychowice–Ludwigsdorf crossing, which bypasses the centre; drivers from the northern part of the county can consider Przewóz–Podrosche.
