Medyka: Ukrainian border-guard shift change at the Ukrainian–Polish border — when and how long to wait

Border guard shift change on the Ukrainian side of Medyka happens twice a day — at 08:00 and 20:00 local time. These are regular shifts that ensure continuous border control.

During shift change, processing of of pedestrians at Medyka typically slows for 20–60 minutes. To minimize wait, plan to cross 30+ minutes before or 60+ minutes after the approximate shift change. Check the live queue above for current status.

At the neighboring Poland checkpoint the border-guard shift change happens at the same local times, but Poland is on Central European Time — one hour behind Kyiv — so there it falls around 07:00 and 19:00 Kyiv time. Because the two shifts overlap, the slowdown stretches into wider windows on both sides: roughly 07:00–08:30 in the morning and 19:00–20:30 in the evening (Kyiv time). During these intervals, processing on both sides can noticeably slow down.

User Reviews — 5.0/5 (1 reviews)

Feedback for the Medyka checkpoint is highly positive, with the single available review giving a perfect 5/5 rating. The reviewer focused on pedestrian crossing conditions and reported an impressively fast experience. According to the review, they joined the queue on the Polish side at 13:45 and had already exited through Ukrainian control by 14:45, meaning the entire pedestrian crossing took only about one hour. This short wait time suggests that foot traffic through Medyka can move smoothly, at least during certain periods. The overall sentiment is very favorable, reflecting satisfaction with both the speed and the flow of the process. For travelers planning to cross here on foot, the key takeaway is that pedestrian crossing may be a quick and efficient option, with a roughly one-hour total transit time observed in mid-afternoon. Because this summary is based on a single data point from December, actual wait times may vary significantly depending on the time of day, day of week, and seasonal demand. Travelers are advised to check current real-time queue information before departure and to consider the pedestrian route at Medyka as a potentially faster alternative to vehicle crossings. The limited sample means patterns cannot be firmly established, but the initial signal is encouraging for those crossing on foot.

Short queue at the UKR checkpoint, horrendous queue (5 hours) at the PL checkpoint. Only two people working in customs area. Also, this website is unreliable. It suggested there was no queue when we arrived.
