Shehyni: Ukrainian border-guard shift change at the Ukrainian–Polish border — when and how long to wait

Border guard shift change on the Ukrainian side of Shehyni happens twice a day — at 08:00 and 20:00 local time. These are regular shifts that ensure continuous border control.

During shift change, processing of of buses at Shehyni typically slows for 20–60 minutes. To minimize wait, plan to cross 30+ minutes before or 60+ minutes after the approximate shift change. Check the live queue above for current status.

At the neighboring Poland checkpoint the border-guard shift change happens at the same local times, but Poland is on Central European Time — one hour behind Kyiv — so there it falls around 07:00 and 19:00 Kyiv time. Because the two shifts overlap, the slowdown stretches into wider windows on both sides: roughly 07:00–08:30 in the morning and 19:00–20:30 in the evening (Kyiv time). During these intervals, processing on both sides can noticeably slow down.

User Reviews — 1.9/5 (31 reviews)

Sentiment toward Shehyni remains overwhelmingly negative. Across 31 reviews, the great majority are 1-star, with a handful of 3-star ratings and only two 4-star exceptions. Travellers repeatedly call it 'the worst border' and openly advise others not to use it — one reviewer who missed a flight after a 15-hour wait wrote plainly: don't come to this crossing. Anger is directed not only at Ukrainian and Polish border officers but at bus carriers who keep routing passengers through Shehyni without informing them of delays.

Wait times dominate the complaints. Bus passengers report 8-17 hours as routine: 12 hours on the Ukrainian side plus 5 on the Polish side, 14-15 hours with no movement, 9-13 hours toward Poland. Throughput is roughly one bus per hour, and queues of 7-13 buses are common; buses often idle for hours at the WOG fuel station before even reaching the checkpoint. The newest review describes a bus stuck in the neutral zone from 11:00 with no movement at all while cars and minibuses passed normally, and calls the Polish officers' attitude toward passengers degrading. Buses are clearly deprioritised.

Practical tips: check the live bus count first, as reviewers say the posted figure understates reality. Avoid tight flight connections from Kraków or Warsaw. Bring water, food and patience — facilities are minimal (one working toilet in the cafe, no benches outdoors), and waiting outside in +27°C heat is hard on children and elderly passengers. Consider an alternative crossing, or travel by car rather than bus.
