About the border: Serbia–Bulgaria border

The Serbian-Bulgarian border separates a non-EU country, Serbia, from Bulgaria, which since 1 January 2025 has been a full Schengen member at its land borders too. It is therefore an external EU and Schengen border, with full passport and customs checks on both sides. For travellers from Poland it matters mainly as part of the route through Serbia to Sofia and on to Turkey, the Bulgarian resorts or Greece.

The page lists two crossings. Gradina–Kalotina is the main crossing on the road from Niš via Dimitrovgrad to Sofia and carries most long-distance traffic, including diaspora transit to Turkey; our data shows it also has the longest queues, especially towards Serbia. The other – Vrška Čuka (Vrashka Chuka on the Bulgarian side) – is in north-eastern Serbia near Zaječar and serves mainly regional traffic between the Timok area and the Vidin region. Queues there are usually much shorter.

The hardest period is summer, when families from Western Europe pass through Kalotina on their way to holidays in Turkey and Bulgaria and then return at the end of the season. Weekends and public holidays add to the load. Entering Bulgaria means entering the EU, with EU customs allowances for cigarettes, alcohol and more, while Serbia applies its own customs rules on entry; check both before shopping.

Before setting off, have a passport or ID card ready (if both countries accept it for your nationality) and insurance valid in Serbia, such as a green card. Bulgaria uses an electronic vignette, and Serbian motorway tolls are paid at toll plazas. If you are heading for Vidin or Romania and Kalotina has a long queue, check the Vrška Čuka crossing near Zaječar.

When to go

Border queues are usually shortest at night, roughly between 01:00 and 05:00, and longest in the evening and at weekends. In the holiday season the Balkan-route peak falls on Saturdays. Check the live figures above before setting off.
