About Ivaylovgrad – Kyprinos

Ivaylovgrad is a small town in Haskovo province at the edge of the eastern Rhodopes, near the dam and reservoir on the Arda river; the remains of the Roman villa of Armira are also nearby. The crossing leads to the Greek village of Kyprinos in the Evros region, from where the road descends into the Evros valley towards Orestiada and Didymoteicho. It is open to cars in both directions and matters mostly locally: for borderland residents, families with relatives on both sides and travellers exploring the lesser-known corners of Thrace.

The Bulgarian-Greek border is an internal Schengen border – after Bulgaria joined the zone at its land borders on 1 January 2025, systematic document checks were abolished. The authorities of either country may still temporarily reintroduce controls, so glance at the current announcements before you go and take an identity document. Bulgarian national roads require an electronic vignette.

Traffic here is usually light and queues are rare; more cars appear mainly on summer weekends and holidays. The approach is on local roads, so it is best to travel in daylight and allow for winter weather.
