About Röszke – Horgoš

The motorway crossing at Röszke – Horgoš links Hungary's M5 with Serbia's A1 on the E75 between Szeged and Subotica. It is the most direct route for anyone driving from Poland via Budapest towards Belgrade, North Macedonia and Greece, so this is where satnavs send most transit traffic. Cars are handled in both directions.

Sixty days of data show a huge gap between the two directions. Leaving Hungary for Serbia takes about an hour and a half on average; Tuesday is the calmest day (around an hour) and Saturday the worst, typically over two hours, with peaks on Saturday and Sunday late mornings. Coming back from Serbia into Hungary is a different scale altogether: more than five hours on average, close to seven on Fridays and Saturdays, and over nine in the afternoon (noon–6 pm). The shortest waits in this direction come at night, a little under two hours, and on Tuesdays, around 3.5 hours.

Heading south, all you need to do is avoid Saturday mornings. The return trip needs planning: if you cannot reach the border at night, it is wiser to switch crossings. Tompa – Kelebija near Subotica averages under an hour in this direction, and Tiszasziget – Đala south of Szeged about half an hour. The neighbouring Röszke 2 – Horgoš 2 beats the motorway (close to three hours) but is still far slower than those two.

A road charge is counted only where the route actually uses a toll road. A vignette is always counted, because in many countries it is required on ordinary roads too.

Where a drive uses a toll motorway, the barrier toll for that section is included in the figure, at the price the road operator publishes for it. A vignette is a flat national price.
