About Kulata – Promachonas
Kulata–Promachonas is the main road crossing between Bulgaria and Greece, in the Struma valley, in Petrich municipality. On the Bulgarian side it is reached by the route from Sofia via Blagoevgrad; on the Greek side the road continues towards Serres and Thessaloniki. Most tourists driving from Poland and Central Europe to Halkidiki, Thessaloniki or deeper into Greece come this way. The crossing handles cars, buses and trucks up to 7.5 t in both directions.
Since 1 January 2025, when Bulgaria became a full Schengen member at its land borders, the Bulgarian-Greek border has been an internal Schengen border and systematic document checks have been abolished. Temporary reintroduction of checks remains possible, so read the current announcements before you leave and bring an ID card or passport. Bulgaria uses an electronic vignette, while Greek motorways charge tolls at toll plazas.
Our data shows that the wait by car towards Bulgaria averages about an hour, longest on Sundays from midday into the afternoon and shortest at night. When returning from Greece it therefore pays to cross early in the morning or late in the evening and to avoid Sunday midday returns.
