About Vama Veche – Duryanka
Vama Veche is the last Romanian village on the Black Sea coast before the border, south of Mangalia, known for the relaxed, alternative atmosphere of its beaches. On the Bulgarian side lies Durankulak in Dobrich province, and the road continues along the coast through Shabla towards Balchik, Albena, Golden Sands and Varna. The crossing is open to cars in both directions and is the most coastal of the Romanian-Bulgarian crossings, chosen by tourists touring the coast and by residents of both countries, including many Romanians holidaying in Bulgaria.
With Romania and Bulgaria fully joining Schengen on 1 January 2025, systematic passport checks here were abolished – checks that in peak season could create long queues. Schengen states can still temporarily reintroduce controls, so check the latest information before travelling and carry an ID card or passport. You need a vignette on both sides: the rovinieta in Romania and the electronic one in Bulgaria.
Traffic here follows the season: from June to September, especially on Fridays and Saturdays towards Bulgaria and on Sundays back, it can be very heavy, while out of season the crossing is quiet. When the coast gets crowded, the inland Negru Vodă–Kardam crossing is a sensible alternative, and for trips towards Shumen or Ruse, Ostrov–Silistra. Compare them on the live board.
